A plain description of what this site does and does not do with information about you.
Last updated: 11 September 2026
The short version
Car Field Guide is a set of static editorial pages. We do not ask you to create an account, we do not run a login, we do not sell anything, and we do not operate an advertising or profiling network of our own. The only information that reaches us in the ordinary course of reading the site is the technical request data that any web server receives, plus whatever you choose to put in an email to us.
Information we receive automatically
When your browser requests a page, our hosting provider's web server records standard request data in its logs. This typically includes the IP address the request came from, the date and time, the page or file requested, the HTTP status returned, the referring page if your browser sent one, and your browser's user agent string.
These logs exist so the site can be kept running, secure and reachable: diagnosing errors, identifying abusive traffic, and investigating outages. They are retained for a limited period in line with our hosting provider's standard practice and are not used to build a profile of you, and not sold or rented to anyone.
Information you give us
If you email the address published on the Contact page, we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach. We use that solely to answer you and, where relevant, to correct the site. Editorial correspondence is kept only as long as it is useful for that purpose.
Please do not send sensitive material by email — no payment card numbers, bank details, government identification numbers, or images of a vehicle title or driving licence. We do not need any of it to answer an editorial question, and email is not a secure channel.
The sign-up form on the home page
The email field on the home page is not connected to a mailing service. It is handled entirely in your browser: the address is checked for a valid format and a confirmation panel appears. The address is not transmitted to us, not written to any database, and not shared with any third party. Nothing is stored after you close the page. When the site is connected to a genuine sign-up service, this section and the notice beside the form will be updated before that happens.
Cookies and similar technologies
This site does not set cookies of its own, does not use browser storage to track you between visits, and does not run third-party analytics, advertising pixels or social media trackers. Your browser may cache page files for performance, which is a normal browser function and is under your control through your browser settings.
Third parties involved in delivering the site
- Hosting provider. Serves the pages and keeps the request logs described above.
- Google Fonts. The two typefaces used here are requested from Google's font servers, which means your browser makes a request to those servers and they receive your IP address and user agent as part of it. Google's own privacy terms govern that request.
No other external service is embedded in these pages. There are no third-party advertising scripts, no comment platforms, no video embeds and no chat widgets.
Children
This site is written for adults buying and running a vehicle. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has sent us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to ask what personal information an organisation holds about you, to have it corrected or deleted, or to object to certain uses. Because we hold very little — typically only server logs and any email you have sent us — most requests are simple to answer.
To make a request, email contact@carfieldguide.com and tell us what you would like. We may need to ask a question or two to locate the relevant records, and we will not use that information for anything else. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of in that respect.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS and sets standard protective response headers. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we keep the amount of information involved as small as possible, which is the most effective protection available to a site of this kind.
Changes to this notice
If this notice changes, the revised version will be published here with a new date at the top. Material changes — for example, connecting a real mailing service or introducing analytics — will be described plainly rather than folded quietly into the text.
