What to include

We are a small editorial operation, so a clear message gets a faster and more useful reply than a long one. If you are writing about something on the site, the two things that help most are the page and the sentence.

• The page address you were reading, copied from your browser.
• The exact wording you are asking about, quoted.
• What you expected instead, and why — a link to a primary source such as a state motor vehicle agency is ideal.
• Your state, if the question involves titling, registration, emissions testing or sales tax, because those rules are not national.

What we can help with

We can correct errors, clarify wording, explain how we reached a conclusion, and point you to the primary source behind a statement. We are glad to hear which parts of a guide were unclear in practice, because that is the fastest way we improve.

What we cannot help with

We cannot value a specific car, tell you whether a particular advert is genuine, diagnose a fault remotely, review a contract, or advise on a dispute with a seller, a dealer or an insurer. Those need somebody who can see the car and the documents, and who is qualified and insured to advise you. For a car, that is an independent mechanic of your choosing; for a contract or a dispute, a licensed professional in your state.

We also cannot arrange finance, insurance or a sale, because we do not do any of those things.

Response times

Messages are read by a person, not an automated system, and are usually answered within a few business days. Corrections that affect accuracy are prioritised over everything else. Email is the quickest way to reach us, and you can also call the number above. We will never call you unprompted or ask for payment details.

A note on the sign-up form

The email field on the home page is not connected to a mailing service. It validates the address in your browser and shows a confirmation panel; the address is not transmitted, stored or shared. If you have already used it, there is nothing for us to delete, because nothing reached us.
