What the guides on this site are, what they are not, and where you need somebody qualified instead.
Last updated: 11 September 2026
General information only
Everything published on Car Field Guide is general editorial information about buying, paying for and living with a used car in the United States. It is written for a wide readership and cannot account for your vehicle, your budget, your insurer, your lender or the law where you live. It is not legal advice, not financial or investment advice, not insurance advice, not tax advice and not a mechanical diagnosis.
Nothing on this site creates a professional relationship of any kind between you and us, and nothing here should be treated as a recommendation to buy, sell, finance or insure any particular vehicle.
No inspection can be performed by a web page
Our guides describe what an ordinary buyer can reasonably look at and listen for. They are a way of structuring a viewing and of knowing which questions to ask. They are not a substitute for a physical inspection by a qualified mechanic, carried out on the actual car, ideally on a lift, at a workshop you chose yourself.
A checklist can reduce the chance of an obvious problem going unnoticed. It cannot detect a hidden fault, confirm that a repair was done correctly, verify a document's authenticity, or predict what a car will do after you own it. Where a decision carries real financial or safety consequences, get a professional to look at it.
Rules, costs and deadlines vary and change
Titling procedures, transfer deadlines, registration and plate fees, sales tax rates, emissions and safety inspection requirements, odometer disclosure rules and used-vehicle consumer protections are set at state level in the United States and sometimes at county or city level. They also change.
Any figure, range or timescale mentioned on this site is a general illustration intended to help you sanity-check a local quote or requirement — not a quoted price and not a statement of what applies to you. Verify anything that affects a decision with your own state motor vehicle agency, your own insurer, your own lender and a professional you have engaged yourself.
No outcome is promised
Following any part of this site does not ensure that a car will be sound, that a price will be fair, that a seller will be honest, or that a purchase will go smoothly. Used vehicles are, by their nature, unpredictable. We describe how to reduce avoidable risk and how to gather evidence before committing; we do not and cannot promise a result, a saving or a return.
Accuracy and updates
We take reasonable care to be accurate at the time of writing and to say clearly when something depends on your location. Even so, errors and omissions are possible, and material accurate on the date shown above may be out of date later. We make no representation or warranty, express or implied, about the completeness, accuracy, reliability or suitability of any content for a particular purpose.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we accept no liability for any loss or damage arising from reliance on material published here, including any loss connected with a vehicle purchase, sale, repair, insurance arrangement or finance agreement. If you notice something wrong, please tell us and we will check it.
External sites and third parties
Where we mention or link to an outside resource — a government agency, a history report provider, an insurer or a workshop — we do so because it may be useful, not as an endorsement. We do not control those organisations, their content, their pricing or their practices, and we are not responsible for them. Read their own terms and privacy notices before relying on them.
No commercial relationship
We do not sell vehicles, list vehicles, broker insurance, arrange finance, sell service contracts or earn commission on anything a reader buys. We do not accept payment to feature a brand, a dealer or a product. If that ever changes, the relationship will be disclosed plainly on the page where it applies.
